14/09/2017 – Euston Hall & Bury St. Edmunds. Euston first appears in the Domesday Book in 1087 as a manor belonging to the abbey at Bury St. Edmunds. The estate, in near ruin, was purchased in 1666 by Henry Bennett, The Earl of Arlington. He set out to build a great house in the French style. The property was inherited in 1685 by his daughter and son-in-law, the first duke and Duchess of Grafton. In the 1740's their son decided to remodel the house and employed Matthew Brettingham to replace the domes with low pyramid roofs which can be seen today. It remained largely unchanged until the south and west wings were consumed by a disastrous fire in 1902, and although rebuilt, in 1952 the Hall became unmanageable and these were demolished. The picturesque courtyard, now the main entrance to the Hall, contains Lord Arlington's stable block and a service wing linking it with the Hall. The Park was designed by William Kent. Several weirs and pools originally designed by Capability Brown, were restored in 2013 to their former glory. The pleasure grounds were laid out by John Evelyn, who was a celebrated landscape gardener.  We will have our lunch in Bury St. Edmunds and in the afternoon we will have a Guided Tour of the Abbey Gardens.  Euston Hall 0917.pdf

26/10/2017 – Broughton Castle & Sulgrave Manor. Broughton Castle is one of the most beautiful historic houses in Oxfordshire. It stands on an island site surrounded by a 3-acre moat. It has lovely walled gardens within the moat. The parkland outside the moat is much appreciated by local residents who are always welcome to walk there. The 14th Century Parish Church within the grounds is well worth a visit. We will buy our lunch in the Town of Banbury before going on to Sulgrave Manor.  Sulgrave Manor was built by Lawrence Washington, a wealthy wool merchant, in the middle of the 16th Century. The Manor remained the family for 120 years, and it was towards the end of this time that John Washington made an epic voyage to the Colony of Virginia to found a dynasty there which resulted in America's most famous son and the father of the nation being born in 1732. You will hear the story of the house from the guides.

03-04/12/2017 – Salisbury & Winchester Christmas Markets. Arrive on Sunday in time for a buffet lunch at the 4* Mercure White Hart Hotel in the heart of Salisbury. This compact city is laid out on a medieval chequer board design with over 500 listed buildings. The afternoon is yours to enjoy the Salisbury Christmas Market and, for those who'd like to, Choral Evensong is at 4.30 p.m. at the Cathedral. All within a short flat walk from the hotel. In the evening the hotel serves a three course dinner. How about a game of cards in front of the log fire?  Your Guide will arrive after breakfast on Monday morning to take you on a scenic drive through the beautiful Test Valley. We stop in the genteel market town of Romsey which you might recognise as Kingsmarkham from the TV adaptations of Ruth Rendell's Inspector Wexford. We visit the magnificent Romsey Abbey where we track down a fun and unusual set of hidden figures known as grotesques – from the pagan Sheel-na-gig to a bevy of stone cats. We stay in Romsey for a two course lunch with coffee before driving through more landscapes of ancient woodland, water-meadows and rolling chalk hills to Winchester.  Once the heart of Alfred the Great's Wessex, Winchester is one of England's most prosperous cities. Hear all about St. Swithin and Jane Austen and enjoy Winchester Christmas Market with more than 100 gaily decorated wooden chalets nestled against the walls of the Cathedral.
We make tracks for home at approximately 5 p.m.

The regular groups for beginners have continued as have a group of 'improvers' that aim to bridge the gap to the main running groups. The main Club Nights are every Tuesday and Thursday evening, gathering at 7.15pm to start at 7.30pm. Anyone that can comfortably run three miles without stopping is welcome to join the main group; those that are not quite at that level are encouraged to progress through the other groups initially.  The Club Nights consist of various sessions, including intervals, hills and tempo runs. The diversity of the Rochford district is utilised to its full extent, especially during the summer months, with off-road sessions in places such as Hockley Woods, Jubilee Country Park and the Roach sea wall.  Anyone who would like to find out more information about RRC should log onto the Club website at www.rochfordrunningclub.org.uk .
